Which Charcoal is Best for Hookah?

Which charcoal is best for hookah – If you want to have a great hookah experience, two things are crucial: the tobacco and the coal. Choosing the right coal, on the other hand, is not as simple as it appears.

Hookah Coals are an important aspect of hookah smoking that is frequently overlooked. They only serve to heat up the shisha. Most people usually use lemonwood trees to make many natural hookah charcoals. (Coconut coals are becoming increasingly popular; however, more on that later!)

Because wood hookah coal takes several minutes to heat, it is ideal for smoking hookah for extended periods of time. Wood hookah charcoal allows you to smoke your herbal shisha or tobacco in a more natural way.

What is Hookah Charcoal Used for?

Hookah charcoal’s primary function is to provide the heat required to cook your shisha tobacco and produce smoke. Once the charcoals are lit, they are placed on top of the foil on your hookah bowl or in your heat management device, and the heat they produce cooks the shisha tobacco, producing those sweet, sweet clouds.

Types of Hookah Charcoals

Hookah smokers will typically use either natural coal, silver hookah charcoal, or a quick-lighting coal. Not sure what the distinction is? We’ll walk you through the process. Each category has advantages and disadvantages, strengths and weaknesses, but only one type can be “the best.”

  1. Natural Hookah Charcoal

So, what exactly do we mean when we say “natural hookah coals?” Natural coconut hookah charcoal has become increasingly popular in the last decade. It doesn’t taste like coconut at all! The product is made from coconut shells that have been left over from coconut farms.

The shells are converted into charcoal before being compressed into briquettes. Because they last longer and emit a clean heat that does not interfere with the shisha flavors, these coals have become the standard for many hookah enthusiasts.

These coals are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, including flat squares, cubes, large cubes, and recently new circular shapes and wedges to accommodate HMD’s. Here are the pros and cons:

  • Pros: include the best flavor, the longest shelf life, and a lower overall cost.
  • Cons: Requires a separate heating source and takes longer to prepare.

A consistent source of heat is required to properly light natural charcoal. When it comes to burners, you have a few options. The standard Single Coil Burner, the Fumari Coal Heater, and a few other options are available.

If you own a lounge, we recommend keeping a few on hand because they do wear out over time. If you own a smoke shop that sells natural charcoal, it is also a good idea to sell these burners to customers who may not already have this type of heating element at home.

  1. Quick Light Hookah Charcoal

Quick lighting charcoals, also known as fast lighting charcoals or instant lighting charcoals, are hookah charcoals that come in a foil-wrapped roll of ten discs. These discs contain a chemical accelerant that allows hookah smokers to light the charcoal tablets with a standard lighter.

They will sparkle and begin to burn quickly, and they will be ready to smoke in less than a minute. Quick light coals are typically sold in 33mm (small) and 40mm (large) sizes, which allow users to customize the heat level and longevity, but quick lite coals are available in a few other sizes.

As the name implies, these coals are quick and convenient, but they have some limitations in terms of burn time and varying degrees of flavor interference that vary from brand to brand. However, this type of charcoal also has some pros and cons. Those are:

  • Pros: It is simple and quick to light, and it can be used almost anywhere.
  • Cons: Shorter burn period (requires more coal changes), residual coal flavor intervention.

Quick-light charcoals are generally made of compressed coal dust and contain a quick-lighting chemical (typically sulfur) to facilitate easy lighting. These are easily ignited with a plastic lighter. While less popular among the general public, there are die-hard hookah smokers who swear by these coals.

  1. Silver Hookah Charcoal

Silver style coals are a subcategory of quick lighting charcoals that are a cross between quick light and natural style coals. These coals typically have a square tab shape and are coated in a silver-colored film that acts as a chemical accelerant, allowing them to be lit with a standard cigarette lighter.

Because these coals fall somewhere between quick lighting and natural style coals, they produce a medium heat level and have a much lower odor and taste when compared to standard quick light coals.

When lit, these coals will not produce the same sparking effect as standard quick light coals, but the silver coating will shrivel up and burn off as the charcoal heats up. Before adding these to your hookah bowl, make sure all of the silver coating has burned off!
